The client wanted a new layout
that would be straightforward and elegantly uncomplicated. They wanted to take
advantage of existing height areas and views.
The gable end was reframed to accept the half circle window; rafter collars
and wall framing were reworked to accept the barrel ceiling. A circular topped
recessed niche was created at the soaking top to continue the theme of the barrel
ceiling and arched windows.
Since the suite was over an unheated garage,
a radiant heated floor system was installed. Matching closets were created at
the entrance to the bath; one closet space was transformed into an upstairs laundry
room housing a full size washer and dryer and built in ironing board cabinet.
Innovative uses included an expansive barrel-vault ceiling, slab glass, radiant
floor heat, and trace ceiling at entrance to bath.
The large soaking tub balances the double vanities and cabinets. The shower and
toilet rooms use etched, translucent glazing as a means of borrowing light from
the bathroom while preserving privacy in each area.
The interior finishes emphasize simplicity and rely on size and texture with a
few contrasting materials to offset the otherwise neutral palette.
